BREAKING NEWS: Ex-NAFDAC Boss, Dora Akunyili Is Dead

Former Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and former Minister of Information, Professor Dora Akunyili has died at the age of 59. In a statement sent on behalf of her family by former Anambra state Governor, Peter Obi, it says that Dr. Akunyili died in a Specialist Cancer Hospital in India on Saturday morning, after a two-year battle with cancer. In spite of her illness, she was unwavering in her belief in a better Nigeria, that was why she defied her condition and was part of Anambra State Handover Committee and a delegate at the National Conference. “Dr. Akinyili was full of concern for Chibok girls, security and other challenges facing the country, she remained prayerful for the release of those girls and for God to help President Goodluck Jonathan to overcome all the challenges facing the nation. Lou Reed Dead: Legendary Rock Musician Dies At 71

Legendary musician Lou Reed has died, Rolling Stone reported  on Sunday. He was 71. The Guardian  confirmed the report, citing Reed's agent.  BBC also  confirmed the report. His exact cause of death was not immediately revealed, but  the AP said  it was a "liver-related ailment." Earlier this year, he received a life-saving  liver transplant  after experiencing chronic liver failure. Reed was open about his addiction to drugs and alcohol in his music. He'd been sober for decades, but his  past drug use  took a heavy toll on his body. In "Heroin," he wrote: “Heroin, be the death of me/Heroin, it’s my wife and it’s my life.” Reed is best known for his work as guitarist, singer and songwriter for the Velvet Underground, and his solo career. A 44-year-old lawyer, Kofi Yawson-Adjei, yesterday committed suicide by hanging himself. According to Ghanaweb.com, Yawson-Adjei, who is the Secretary of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GIS) and valuers, hanged himself in his private office on the first floor of a rented premises at Adabraka. The father of three is said to have left his Kokomlemle residence about 3 a.m. for his office (in a taxi), where the incident took place. He left a written note directing a lady named Narh to give a signed cheque for GH¢3,000 to his wife. Yawson-Adjei was with the Valuation Estate and Surveying Division of the GIS and was Chief Executive Officer of Property Lane Limited. When the Daily Graphic team got to the scene about 11 a.m., pockets of residents had gathered discussing the issue. Personnel from the Homicide Unit of the Ghana Police Service were also at the scene to convey the body to the Police Hospital mortuary. The former governor reportedly died at his Ibadan residence in Oyo State around 6 PM Nigerian time some 24 hours after returning from vacation in the US. Director of Publicity of the  Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State, Ayo Fadaka confimred Dr. Agagu's death to  Saharareporters . He said   the former governor had been in good health checking up on party operatives since returning from vacation yesterday. He said party members were shocked to learn that the former governor and minister slumped and died this afternoon. Eni Akinsola, a media aide to Ondo State governor, Olusegun Mimiko, told SaharaReporters  that the state government was yet to be officially briefed about the passing of the former governor.

President Goodluck Jonathan has commiserated with the family of Honourable Inuwa Sule Udi, the Deputy Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, who was involved in a car accident while on his way home from Kano. Describing the death of the lawmaker as ‘very painful and untimely’ President Jonathan also condoled with the Jigawa State House Speaker, members of the Assembly and the government and people of Jigawa State, saying that Honourable Inuwa Sule Udi’s legislative experience would be solely missed, not just Jigawa state alone but the nation as whole, while still expressing his shock at the death of the lawmaker who has been in the Jigawa State House of Assembly as a third-term member. President Jonathan ended by praying that God Almighty would console members of the Udi family and grant the soul of the departed lawmaker peaceful rest.

NMA arrests 12 quack doctors, shuts four hospitals

The Nigerian Medical Association, Rivers State chapter, said on Wednesday that it arrested 12 suspected quack medical doctors and shut down four illegal hospitals in the state. Chairman of the state NMA, Dr. Ibitrokoemi Krukrubo in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Port Harcourt, said the suspects had been handed over to the police. Krukrubo said the suspects were not qualified to practice medicine and did not have the requisite skills and knowledge to treat patients. He said the arrest was part of its drive to rid the state of quack doctors so as to restore sanity and regain the public confidence in the medical profession in the state. He said, “We have shut down about four clinics and we are still investigating others.
