N979.6m subsidy fraud: Court orders arrest of 2 oil marketers

An Ikeja High Court on Tuesday issued a bench warrant on two oil marketers, Oluwaseun Ogunbambo and Habila Theck, for failing to attend their trial without cogent reasons. The warrant was issued by Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo on the marketers who are standing trial for an alleged N979.6 million fuel subsidy fraud. The  judge also revoked the bail earlier granted to the first accused (Ogunbambo). Ogunbambo and Theck were charged alongside their firm — Fargo Energy Ltd. — by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). They were arraigned on a six-count charge bordering on conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretences, forgery and use of forged documents. At Tuesday’s proceedings, the duo failed to appear in court, prompting the EFCC counsel, Mr Francis Usani, to ask the court to issue warrants on them. Usani said there was no medical report to back Ogunbambo’s claim that his absence was as a result of ill-health. He said the absence had stalled the hearing of the ap

Outrage trails hanging of 4 prisoners in Edo

Edo state on Monday hanged four prisoners, in what was believed to be Nigeria's first known executions since 2006, drawing outrage from rights activists. Nigeria has faced international scrutiny over its death penalty, with concerns over whether suspects receive a fair trial in a country where corruption is widespread. While they would mark the first official, known executions since 2006, Nigerian security forces have been repeatedly accused of extra-judicial killings during that time period. President Goodluck Jonathan recently called on state governors to sign death warrants, saying it was their responsibility under the law. The Amnesty International condemned the decision by the Nigerian government to hang the four convicts in Benin city, the capital of Edo state. The body said the hanging was done even as moves by some NGOs to save five of the convicts sentenced to death failed as a federal high court rejected to hear the lawsuit filed to stop the hanging. Two executioners w

The bank's branch Service Manager, Mr. Kayode Aiyewunmi, who gave evidence in court, said Jaiyeola was on a N20, 000 monthly pay and was a member of the Odua People's Congress. He said the company had observed that one of the bank's four ATMs was having a reconciliation problem and had employed the service of an expert to help unravel mysterious disappearances of money. Aiyewunmi said, "We discovered that there was always a shortage of cash in the machine. "Despite our reconciliation efforts, the ATM was still having problems and we engaged the service of an expert who submitted his report and said the machine did not have any reconciliation issue. "He said somebody was breaking into the machine in the middle of

Four convicts hanged in Edo, as Amnesty, LEDAP kick

Four death row prisoners, Chima Ejiofor, Daniel Nsofor, Osarenmwinda Aigbonkhan and Richard Igagu in Edo State, were, yesterday, executed, despite their pending appeals at the Court of Appeal. It will be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan had recently directed state governors to sign the execution warrant of death row inmates, advising them not to shy away from same, as it was part of their duties. Vanguard gathered that the execution took place despite the pendency of the suit by the condemned inmates, challenging their being on death row for over 16 years. They had also asked that their conviction be commuted to life imprisonment. Meanwhile, Legal Defence and Assistance Project, LEDAP and Amnesty International, yesterday, condemned the execution. Vanguard was informed that the execution was carried out at 6:45pm, yesterday, by hang men. Edo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Henry Idahagbon, in his reaction, said the executed men were convicted

Philanthropists As Fraudsters

BEFORE millions of Nigerians, via live television, in the presence of the President, Nigeria’s men and women of means stepped forward to announce donations to victims of the flood that ravaged the country. It was the worst flood in more than half a century. The sombre gathering only came to life as billions of Naira (some in foreign currencies) was listed as pledges from individuals and organisations. The donations totalled N11.35 billion; money could bring relief to the victims. More than seven months after the November 8 event, donors have defaulted. The Presidential Flood Relief and Rehabilitation Committee is threatening to name them after a June 30 deadline. The committee has asked them to “respect themselves and maintain their honour and integrity”, by redeeming their pledges. It is amazing that the committee still associates the defaulters with “honour and integrity”. They were not forced to give the money. They saw an opportunity to make a name; they milked the mileage

Subsidy Bribe Scam: Farouk, Emenalo ask judge to hands-off trial

Justice Mudashiru Oniyangi of an Abuja High Court, Wednesday, fixed July 10 to rule on an application that was filed before him by the former Chairman and Secretary of the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on fuel subsidy probe, Farouk Lawal and Mr Boniface Emenalo, asking him to hands-off their trial. The embattled lawmakers who are facing corruption charge  entered against them by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, accused the judge of misappropriating the law when he held that the anti-graft agency successfully established a prima-facie criminal case to warrant their prosecution. Emenalo and Farouk Arguing through their lawyer, Mr Ricky Tarfa, SAN, the duo, insisted that the judge occasioned great injustice against them when he declined to quash the 7-count charge before the court for want of incriminating evidence, even as they maintained that the judge, on January 31, erroneously granted leave to the ICPC to file an “inco

Dolce And Gabbana Guilty: Designers Convicted Of Evading Taxes On $1.3 Billion In Income

A Milan court on Wednesday convicted the designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana of tax evasion. They were found guilty of failing to declare 200 million euros ($268 million) through a Luxembourg company to authorities and given a one year and eight months suspended jail sentence. They were ordered to pay a penalty of 500,000 euros (about $670,000) to tax authorities. The court, however, acquitted them of misrepresenting income of 416 million euros (around $560 million) each, even though the statute of limitations had expired on the charge. The designers have denied the charges. Defense lawyer Massimo Dinoia pledged to appeal the ruling, saying the fact the court issued an acquittal on a charge that had expired, instead of just letting it fall to the statute of limitations, "means the proof of their innocence is evident." Two years ago, a judge threw out a tax evasion and fraud case against the pair, whose label Dolce&Gabbana is a Milan fashion mainstay. Italy

US judges consider fate of 13 year old

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AFP) – US appeals judges Tuesday began considering whether a 13-year-old boy accused of murder could be tried as an adult -- and risk spending the rest of his life behind bars. The Pennsylvania Superior Court was considering a case that has attracted international scrutiny because of the possibility that Jordan Brown, who was just 11 at the time of his alleged crime, might be imprisoned as an adult and never be released. The three-judge panel queried lawyers about the decision by a lower court to bar Brown from being sent to a juvenile court. A key requirement of the juvenile court would be for Brown to show potential for rehabilitation, in which case he could be free as early as when he turned 21. However, the lower court found against him after insisting that he show remorse -- something his lawyers say he can't do, given that he insists he did not commit the murder. On Tuesday, defense lawyers argued that the lower court had violated
