Skype to be pre-installed in new version of Microsoft Windows

Skype will be pre-installed in Microsoft Windows 8.1, due to be released next month. Skype is owned by Microsoft. Bloatware is the term given to programs that come pre-installed on computers even though it's unlikely they will be used by every owner. Sometimes they are difficult to get rid of and can consume resources unnecessarily. Pre-installed anti- virus software has often fit that definition. Now, Skype looks to be joining that list. Microsoft owns the voice, audio and text messaging program and will be making it the default instant communications tool on the newest version of Windows. "This is fantastic news for both Skype and Windows users," Skype said in a blog post . "Now you don’t have to download your favorite app to stay in touch whenever you’re apart. With Windows 8.1, simply tap the Skype Live Tile, log in, and you’re ready to go." The new integration is similar to how Apple installs its FaceTime video chat service on the OSX operating

Apple iPhone 5C yellow shell shows up in new video

The heavily rumoured Apple iPhone 5C is set to be released in a range of different colours with a new video showing a yellow rear shell that will reportedly adorn the back of the device. Sonny Dickson’s new high-quality video shows a yellow rear shell that purportedly comes from an iPhone 5C that is to be unveiled at an Apple media event next month. The video compares the device to other iPhone models that have been released over the years and shows it has rounded corners and is similar in dimensions to the iPhone 5. The back is made from plastic and this reflects the fact that it will be a cheaper version of the aluminium-backed iPhone 5. Dickson has released other picture sets in recent weeks that have seen various colour-ways that will also be available and reflect the fact the C stands for “Colour”. The earlier pictures suggest that green, white, red and blue devices will sit alongside the yellow one shown in the latest video. It’s widely expected that the new device w

First Firefox OS smartphones to be sold on EBay

The ZTE Open, the first Firefox OS smartphone, will soon be available for purchase for U.S. customers on EBay. (ZTE) By Salvador Rodriguez August 12, 2013, 12:55 p.m. Smartphone maker ZTE said it will sell Mozilla's first Firefox OS smartphone on EBay to U.S. customers but did not say when it would be available for sale. The ZTE Open, which went on sale last month in Spain, Venezuela and Colombia, will be sold for $79.99. The device comes unlocked and will be able to work with all cellular networks, according to the Chinese phone maker. Firefox OS is a new operating system developed by Mozilla, the maker of the popular Firefox Web browser. Mozilla says it is releasing the new platform as a way to give consumers more choices besides Apple and Google, the two companies that currently dominate the smartphone market. Mozilla also says Firefox OS is aiming to make owning a smartphone affordable, especially for those in emerging markets. "The ZTE Open offers customers

Is this it? Photo purportedly shows Apple 'iPhone 5C'

Apple is reportedly straying from its standard strategy this fall and launching not one, but two new iPhone handsets. The flagship model will be the iPhone 5S, which is said to feature a design similar to the iPhone 5 with the addition of a faster processor, a better camera, a fingerprint scanner and possibly a new champagne color option. The second is the more affordable “iPhone 5C,” high-quality photos of which were recently published by insider Sonny Dickson. Now Dickson is back with a new photo gallery -- this time showing the iPhone 5C shell in green. No new details are revealed by the images, though they once again support earlier rumors that the new entry-level iPhone will be made available in a variety of colors. Apple’s next-generation iPhone 5S will be unveiled during a press conference on September 10 and the new iPhone 5C will likely debut at the same event. Additional photos of the iPhone 5C shell follow below and the rest can be found on Dickson’s website, wh

Samsung and BlackBerry team up over BBM, marketing in Africa

Smartphone manufacturers Samsung and BlackBerry have teamed up to announce a new marketing partnership across Africa. As part of the arrangement, Samsung has said that it will include the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) for Android app in its curated app store for Galaxy handsets, alongside its own ChatOn service. BBM will form part of the Samsung Messaging Hub that comes preinstalled on all of the South Korean firm's Android smartphones. The BBM for Android app is still in a closed beta testing stage, but BlackBerry says that it will be available in the Samsung Apps store on launch day. "We believe that BBM has the potential to become the number one messaging client around the globe," BlackBerry's managing director for South and Southern Africa, Alexandra Zagury, told ZDNet, "and Samsung is the leading Android manufacturer in Africa. We think we've found a great partner to grow the BBM family. "Android is absolutely a key platform for us to grow BBM

HOW DOES MOTO X COMPARE TO IPHONE 5 AND GALAXY S4?

Motorola showed off an entire  line of new Droid  phones last week, but it was nothing but a tease for non- Verizon  customers as that was the only service provider those handsets are available on. A flagship phone has to transcend those network lines to reach as many hands as possible. That job appears like it belongs to Moto X, the newest handset from Motorola that will be available on every major carrier. Does Moto X have enough power to push itself up the ranks and be the signature phone of Motorola? How does it compare to the other handsets at the top of their class? We find out by pitting the Moto X against the  Galaxy S4  and iPhone 5 in a spec showdown.   iPhone 5 Galaxy S4 Moto X  Size 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 (mm) 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 (mm) 129 x 65 x 10.4 (mm) Weight 112g 130g 130g Screen 4.0-inch LCD 5.0-inch Super AMOLED 4.7-inch AMOLED Resolution 1136×640 pixels 1080×1920 pixels 720×1280 pixels OS iOS 6.0.1 Android 4.2 with TouchWiz UI Android 4.2 Storag

WhatsApp’s BIG secret: The second check mark does NOT mean your message has been read

As BlackBerry gets set to take its native BBM instant messaging service cross-platform to Android and iOS, there’s no doubt the incumbent it wants to crush is WhatsApp. Over the last couple of years WhatsApp has grown to have a huge base of users across platforms and around the world. Jump into any phone app store, and WhatsApp will always be near the top of the list. WhatsApp has been successful because it gained critical mass in filling a void that BBM could have and arguably should have done years ago. Anybody who’s used BBM and watched the rise of WhatsApp knows WhatsApp essentially ripped off BBM in form and function, and has been playing catch up to BBM on a feature by feature basis. Most people I know don’t love WhatsApp – they simply tolerate it, as it gets the job done well enough for the most part. The thing is, it really doesn’t. One critical feature that WhatsApp is sorely missing that a lot of users simply do not realize is a notification that your message has been r

Nokia Expected to Introduce Lumia 1000-Series Superphones.

Nokia Lumia 1000 first and exclusive hands on review 41 mp camera windows 8 - YouTube Although Nokia Lumia 900-series are meant to compete against flagship smartphones from Apple and Samsung, they have fail to become as popular as the iPhones or Galaxy S-series. After failing to offer breakthrough functionality with Lumia 900 family of smartphones, the company readies Lumia 1000-series of dream phones with unique capabilities. Nokia Lumia 900, 920, 925 and 928 have clearly failed to capture attention of the masses, so now Nokia is bringing its main weapon: imaging capabilities. The Nokia Lumia with 41MP sensor and Carl Zeiss optics currently known under Eos code-name will not only carry camera not available on any other smartphone today, but it will also ignite a brand new product series, the Lumia 1020, according to @Evleaks . Nokia Lumia 1020 (aka Eos) will be introduced at Zoom Reinvented event on July 11, 2013. Based on images published by GSMArena and ViziLeaks , Noki

Enact laws to protect critical facilities — Ndukwe

Former Executive Vice-Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission, Mr. Ernest Ndukwe, has urged the Federal Government and the National Assembly to enact laws to protect Information and Communications Technology and power facilities as critical national infrastructure. Ndukwe, who made the call at Internet Governance Forum in Abuja, said the enactment of a law on critical national infrastructure would provide a framework for curtailing the growing vandalism of ICT, transport and electricity facilities across the country. According to him, ICT including broadband constitutes essential infrastructure of today’s digital economy as the networks make it possible for African nations to participate actively in the world economy. He added that increased dependency on ICT infrastructure by other sectors could lead to increased vulnerability of the economy as a whole, thus the need to protect the infrastructure from being attacked physically or in the cyberspace. He said, “No modern eco

Why phones with real keyboards still exist

Touchscreen keyboards are the de facto standard on smartphones now - so what's with the diehards that won't let go of their old-school BlackBerry devices? It may be preaching to the choir coming to the CrackBerry community to espouse the virtues of a real, physical keyboard, but when it comes to today's Talk Mobile topic, a lot of folks on the outside figure the debate between buttons and pixels has long been over. Sure enough, the market has spoken with its wallet and gone with all-touch smartphone models, but at this point I think that has just as much to do with a lack of options as anything. The all-touch revolution was kicked off in no small part by the iPhone, and ever since, finding anything other than a minimally-featured slab of glass at your local carrier store has become a challenge. For many, an all-touch device was their first smartphone (heck, it was probably their second, too), and they adapted from the get-go to virtual on-screen keyboards. For those

A Homeless Man and His BlackBerry

You could tell he was different the moment he walked in the coffee shop. It wasn't his appearance. He looked presentable, if a little rough around the edges, clutching an old BlackBerry to his barrel chest. It was how he moved: warily, shoulders hunched over and eyes darting. The body language would read as suspicious, if not for the flicker of fear and apprehension in his eyes — as if he was scared of being noticed, vigilant to his surroundings and desperately trying to blend in at the same time. He ordered a coffee, carefully counting out coins on the counter. He sat down at the table near me and pulled out his phone, just like nearly everyone else at the shop. He punched in a few numbers and began talking in a low voice, discreet but urgent. I was only a few seats away, but I couldn't help but overhear his conversations. Did someone have some cash jobs for him? Could he crash at a friend of a friend's place? Could he get a ride out to the soup kitchen? After a few
