Nokia Launches Lumia 2520 10-Inch Tablet and 1520 6-Inch Phone

Today might be a shining moment for fans of the Nokia(soft) brand. In an event in Dubai, that is almost sure to be drowned out by the Apple iPad event, Nokia announced   its first Windows RT tablet: the 2520. They also announced a pair of 6” smartphones: the 1520 and 1320. Lumia 2520 Tablet The  Lumia 2520  is a machine that surprised me a bit. Quite frankly, I was expecting it to be of the 7-8” range. Instead Nokia went with a full-size 10.1” tablet. In terms of styling, this tablet is very Nokia and reminiscent of a super-sized versions of its smartphones. Yes, that means colors and the options will be black, silver, cyan blue, and red. Unlike its soon-to-be stepbrother the Surface 2, this is all tablet. There are no PC-like features like USB ports, just a micro-USB 3.0 and HDMI type-D. That’s pretty standard for a 10.1 tablet. That being said, it becomes a little more Surface-like when the Nokia Power Keyboard is used. This is a lot like the covers for the S...

The 21-year-old has a son, Isaac, born January 2010, notes Us Weekly. She is now pregnant with husband Javi Marroquin's child (Isaac's father is Jo Rivera). Earlier this week, the proud father-to-be posted an ultrasound photo to his Instagram account: Although still somewhat controversial, Lowry is hardly the first celebrity to open up about the practice, known for preventing or reducing negative aspects of childbirth, such as postpartum depression, "baby blues," fatigue, lactational insufficiency and hormone deficiencies.  Kim Kardashian, January Jones and Holly Madison  have famously talked about eating their placentas in pill form after delivery.

Reports have not specified the amount of money the couple received for the child. Jonathan Pleads with ASUU to Call off Strike

As the current strike embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) enters its fourth month, President Goodluck Jonathan has again pleaded with the striking lecturers to call off their action in the interest of the students and parents at home. President Jonathan made the call  Saturday during the inauguration and dedication of  the College of Engineering Building at Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), as part of activities marking the first convocation ceremony of the institution. He urged the striking lecturers to temper anger with patriotism if only in the interest of the students who have been at home since the face- off between the teachers and the Federal Government began about four months ago.

Death Penalty For Kidnappers: Ex-Lawmaker Backs Oshiomhole

A former member of the National Assembly, Mr Ehiogie West-Idahosa, on Saturday lauded Gov. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo, for making kidnapping a capital offence in the state. West-Idahosa, who represented Ovia North-East and South-West Constituency in the House of Representatives, said this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. NAN reports that Oshiomhole had on Oct.18 signed the law making kidnapping in the state punishable by death. ``I am convinced that death penalty for kidnappers will definitely send the signal that the state is not ready to accept criminality,’’ West-Idahosa said. He, however, said the law would only be successful if it was properly implemented by the appropriate security agencies. In its reaction, a human rights group, the Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP), opposed the law, saying it would not deter kidnapping in the state. Mr Chino Obiagwu, National Coordinator of the group told NAN that the government ...

Samsung reportedly close to releasing Glass competitor — and Google’s involved

This one is definitely a rumor, but its source is reliable enough to warrant a little speculation. Analyst and blogger  Eldar Murtazin  tweeted a rather definite message this week that Samsung is “developing [its] own version of Google Glass. We will see it (probably) around April – May under Gear Glass brand.” Given that Google’s own version of Glass is not expected to hit the mass market until early 2014, Samsung’s Glass competitor could very well race Google’s to market. That might seem like a nightmare for Google, which has invested heavily in Glass and is no doubt planning for a strong event launch, but as was pointed out in a CNet article, the use of the word “Glass” implies an official partnership. Samsung is known for its aggressive branding and Google would likely raise legal concerns regardless, so it’s unlikely the brand Gear Glass would be used without a partnership. Does Google even want to sell Glass, or does it just want you wearing face-screens? ...

Verily Magazine's No-Photoshop Policy Proves It Can Be Done

A magazine with no Photoshop whatsoever? Yes, it  finally  exists. Changing the magazine game is clearly an uphill battle, but  Verily , a fashion and lifestyle magazine aimed at women 18-35, is making its best case. The idea for the publication began to hatch back in 2011 with the premise that most mainstream magazines for women deliver narrow and often negative messages, ones that make women feel bad about themselves rather than good and "fail to reflect our lives or our philosophies as women." They also fail to reflect what we actually look like. Thus Verily's mandate: "Whereas other magazines artificially alter images in Photoshop to achieve the so-called ideal body type or leave a maximum of three wrinkles,  Verily never alters the body or face structure of the Verily models ." As Verily's Ashley Crouch told us, the mag's co-founders Kara Eschbach and Janet Sahm believe that "the unique features of women, whether crows feet, frec...

ASUU strike: NLC restates support for unions, blames federal government

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has stated that the Federal and State Governments were responsible for the ongoing ASUU strike, as well as threats of other strikes by different unions in the country. While blaming the government for failing to abide by agreements reached with different unions in the country, it hailed the sustained action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The acting General Secretary of the NLC, Mr. Chris Uyot, in an interview with THISDAY, said ASUU deserved more attention than it is currently receiving, as it has to do with the improvement of facilities and standard of education in the country. “ASUU is our affiliate and for every step they have taken, we have been with them; we have been briefed. The NLC is as invested in this case as ASUU itself. The vice-president has been appointed to take over the negotiations and the ball is now in the court of the government as it were. We do not think that the government has given it the type o...

The Future Of BlackBerry Points To Software

. BlackBerry Messenger may be where the company wants to push its resources. But enterprise software is where BlackBerry has to make its money BlackBerry knows who is paying the bills. And it isn't  people buying their smartphones.  BlackBerry's revenue these days comes mostly from its enterprise clients that use its services for security and management of mobile devices and applications. In its most recent quarter, almost half of the company's revenue came from its Services division as sales of its smartphones plummeted. BlackBerry serves these enterprises through its BlackBerry Enterprise Server 10 hardware that enterprises install and maintain. But hardware of any sort may be an untenable solution for BlackBerry going forward. The future of BlackBerry, if there is one, is going to be in software for the enterprise. BlackBerry has some vague notions that it can turn its BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) service into a powerhouse messaging service that ...

Court fixes Nov 7 for judgment in Kabiru Sokoto’s case

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Monday, tentatively fixed November 7 for judgment in the trial of Kabiru Sokoto, the alleged mastermind of the 2011 Christmas day bombing in St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger State. The trial judge, Justice Ademola Adeniyi, fixed the date after the defence counsel, S. Okoh, adopted his written address. Okoh had submitted that all the charges leveled against the accused were not based on evidence and as such should be discountenanced. He further argued that the accused is standing trial as alleged by the prosecution that he had knowledge of the Madalla  bombing but he (accused) had denied it, adding that before a person will be guilty under Section 7 (1) of  the Terrorism  Prevention Act, the actual knowledge must be proved. Okoh also argued that  Boko Haram was not an illegal body until around April this year when the Federal Government proscribed and labelled it so. He submitted that up till t...

Fashola, who disclosed this at the event marking the 2013 World Habitat Day: 'Urban Mobility,' at the Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, said the introduction of the cable car transportation was in line with the global practices. The governor, who was represented by Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, described the innovation as vital to achieving the mega city status. He assured that, "the present administration is committed to activating every means of transportation in Lagos in order to reduce numbers of vehicles on the road, which translates to unhealthy volumes of carbon emissions." Fashola noted that the state would soon commission the Blue and Red Rail lines to further increase res...
