The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled its Microwork job creation initiative. The event which held in Lagos was launched by the ministry of communication technology in a collaboration with World Bank.
The Minister of Communication Technology Omobola Johnson said the job creation scheme, ‘Microwork for JobCreation’, is aimed at reducing unemployment and creating wealth for youths of Nigeria.
The ministry, with support from the STEP-B project under the Ministry of Education, is unveiling the scheme to address the issues of employability and job creation, using information technology.
The primary objective of the project is to create awareness about the work opportunities in the Microwork and e-Lancing space as well as create job opportunities for Nigerian youths in order to reduce unemployment, according to the statement.
The initiative also aims to reduce the country’s brain drain, create business opportunities for potential Nigerian Microwork and e-Lancing companies, wealth generation opportunities for the young and showcase opportunities for Nigerian businesses to work more efficiently and have a broader workers’ database.
Johnson added that in line with the mandate of the CT ministry to create jobs by taking advantage of fast-growing ICTs in Nigeria,it is tapping into the Microwork opportunity in order to reduce youth unemployment, which currently is high at 60 per cent. The Microwork for Job Creation in Nigeria initiative includes two aspects of Paid Crowdsourcing technology: Microwork and e-Lancing. And over 900 people are said to be part of this first phase.
The ministry called on unemployed Nigerians to channel their energy into technology which is capable of transforming their lives. According to stakeholders at the event, if the initiative is well implemented it would drastically reduce the current unemployment rate in the country
