Cannes Jewelry Robbery: Chopard Jewels Lifted From Hotel Room At Film Fest (UPDATED)

It sounds, ironically, like something out of a movie: $1 million worth of Chopard jewelry has been stolen at the Cannes Film Festival.

French police confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter, among other news sources, thata thief made off with Chopard jewelry from the safe of a Hotel Novotel Cannes roomon Thursday night. The hotel room belonged to a Chopard employee, and the jewels were set to be worn by stars walking the festival red carpets.

Chopard is a longtime sponsor of the Cannes Film Festival and also designs the Palme d'Or award, the gold trophy presented to the Best Feature Film of the festival. Just last night, Chopard joined with Cannes to honor rising stars Blanca Suarez and Jeremy Irvine at the Chopard Trophee 2013 ceremony.

No word yet on whether the jewelry has been recovered (or which celebs the baubles were intended for). We've reached out to Chopard and will update should we hear back.

UPDATE: We've heard back from Chopard with a few updates. According to a Chopard rep, "An employee of the House of Chopard has been the victim of a robbery last night in their hotel room while not on the premises. There is currently a police investigation underway so we can only let you know that the value of the pieces stolen is far lower than those in the figures circulating in the media. The jewels stolen are not part of the collection of jewels that are worn by actresses during the Cannes Film Festival."

Samsung reportedly close to releasing Glass competitor — and Google’s involved

This one is definitely a rumor, but its source is reliable enough to warrant a little speculation. Analyst and blogger Eldar Murtazin tweeted a rather definite message this week that Samsung is “developing [its] own version of Google Glass. We will see it (probably) around April – May under Gear Glass brand.” Given that Google’s own version of Glass is not expected to hit the mass market until early 2014, Samsung’s Glass competitor could very well race Google’s to market.
