Police begin search for lady who allegedly posted the death rumour on internet

For the second time in five months, the Governor of Enugu State, Sullivan Chime, was rumoured dead on Thursday, causing panic among his relatives, residents of the state and political associates.

The rumours reportedly emanated from a “breaking news” story posted on an Internet Website, saying the governor passed away in an Indian Hospital where he was allegedly receiving treatment

It subsequently spread across the country with many making frantic telephone calls to confirm the story.

However, the story turned out to be a hoax after careful investigation by the governor’s aides and relatives.

Although, efforts by PREMIUM TIMES to reach the Enugu State Commissioner of Information, Chuks Ugwuoke, and the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Chukwudi Achife, failed, it was gathered that Mr. Chime was in Abuja when the latest rumours began.

Patrick Asadu, a member of the House of Representatives representing Nsukka/ Igboeze South of Enugu State refuted the rumours.

“It is not true. The governor is even in Abuja. I don’t know why Nigerians will spread such rumours. It is not true,” Mr. Asadu said.

At the PDP national secretariat, there was nothing to suggest that one of its governors passed away, when our reporter visited.

The governor was also in Abuja last week to attend the meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum, PDPGF.

Sources in Enugu also said that the police have begun manhunt for a lady who allegedly posted the news on the internet.

Similar rumours broke out in December last year while Mr. Chime was receiving treatment abroad.

Mr. Chime has been having a health challenge, the reason he was away from the state for about five months between October 2012 and February 2013. A few days after his return, after 141 days away, he admitted that he was abroad to treat the cancer of the nose.

He had said, “In August last year, I was privileged to be one of those nominated by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to go to Germany to study their federalism, I was to represent the South East zone; I had to use the opportunity of the trip to pass through London to do my medicals since it was the only opportunity I had to do that. After my medicals, I was certified fit by the doctors, but I noticed that I had a little growth beneath my jaw. Ordinarily, nobody could see it but I felt it seriously and asked the doctors to further investigate on it.

“I was later referred to a GP who after examining me said there was nothing wrong with me. I still asked for further investigation. I even made arrangement with them to help me set appointment for closer investigation. I left for Germany and had to still return to London to keep the appointment for proper screening of the growth. It was after the screening that it was discovered that the growth in question was cancerous. It was also discovered that the main tumour was behind my nose; it was simply called cancer of the nose.”

Samsung reportedly close to releasing Glass competitor — and Google’s involved

This one is definitely a rumor, but its source is reliable enough to warrant a little speculation. Analyst and blogger  Eldar Murtazin  tweeted a rather definite message this week that Samsung is “developing [its] own version of Google Glass. We will see it (probably) around April – May under Gear Glass brand.” Given that Google’s own version of Glass is not expected to hit the mass market until early 2014, Samsung’s Glass competitor could very well race Google’s to market. That might seem like a nightmare for Google, which has invested heavily in Glass and is no doubt planning for a strong event launch, but as was pointed out in a CNet article, the use of the word “Glass” implies an official partnership. Samsung is known for its aggressive branding and Google would likely raise legal concerns regardless, so it’s unlikely the brand Gear Glass would be used without a partnership. Does Google even want to sell Glass, or does it just want you wearing face-screens? ...
