NYSC penalizes 4 corpers in Enugu, Chime honours 21 others

Twenty-one (21) Batch ‘B” 2012 NYSC Corps members who served in Enugu State were on Thursday presented with honours awards by the state government for their exceptional performances during the service year.

However, four corps members were penalized for either absconding during the service or disobeying NYSC rules.

The awards were presented by the State Governor, Mr. Sullivan Chime who was represented by his Deputy, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi on the occasion of the
passing-out ceremony of the corps members, at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu.

Twenty-seven other corps members received commendation letter at the ceremony for their various contributions in the areas of their primary
assignment towards the development of their host communities.

The State Governor’s NYSC Honours award came with a cash prize of N100,000 for the first position while 2nd to the 10th positions received N80,000 cash each.

The State NYSC Governing Board Chairman’s Merit award winners received a cash prize of N60, 000 each.

In an address on the occasion, Governor Chime affirmed the continued determination of the state government to reward corps members who excel in the discharge of their responsibilities in the state, adding that the regular payment of the allowance of corps members in the state was to motive them to do better.

The Governor reassured the NYSC Management that government would continue to tackle the scheme’s challenges with a view to making its operation smooth and relevant to the people.

According to the Governor, the on-going building of a 500-bed hostel at the NYSC orientation camp, Awgu is a pointer to government’s effort to make the scheme’s operation relevant.

He therefore charged the corps members to be good ambassadors of the NYSC scheme by allowing the useful lessons of patience, tolerance, dignity of labour and selfless service, learnt during their service year be their guiding principles in their future endeavours.

The State Chief Executive enjoined the corps members to embrace the credit facilities by the NYSC and other financial institutions to set up businesses to save them from the frustration of searching endlessly for jobs as government cannot employ all the teeming youth.

Earlier in an address, the State NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Hilary Nasamu announced that 3,096 of the 2012 Batch ‘B’ Corps members were passing out, expressing happiness that none of the members died during the service year.
He pointed out that one corps member absconded while 3 others had their service year extended for infringing the scheme’s by-laws.
