Chimamanda leads other writers to 2013 Literary Evening in Lagos

Chimamanda Adichie, Nigeria’s celebrated writer and Creative Director of Farafina Trust, is scheduled to lead a team of international literary writers to the 2013 Literary Evening; as this year’s Creative Writers Workshop ends in style on August 16.
The event, slated for the Lagos Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, is expected to bring to an end the exciting session for talented creative writers, who for the past 10 days, under expert tutelage, have been honing their writing skills in Lagos.
Also adding colour to the evening will be wave making artiste, KCee, whose song Limpopo is currently rocking the airwaves and holds top spot on various music charts across the country.
Aside from Chimamanda Adichie, other international writers expected are Kenyan writer, Binyavanga Wainaina, who in July 2002 won the Caine Prize for his short story “Discovering Home”. He is the founding Editor of Kwani, the first literary magazine in East Africa since Transition Magazine. Binyavanga is currently a Bard Fellow and the director of the Chinua Achebe Center for African Literature and Languages at Bard College.
Aslak Sira Myhre, a Norwegian politician and former party leader of Red Electoral Alliance (RV), who left politics to become an executive director of Iles, an association aimed at stimulating children and youth’s reading, is also expected. He is the director for the House of Literature in Oslo which opened in 2007, and is Europe’s largest and has more than 250,000 visits annually.
Eghosa Imasuen, a Nigerian writer and medical doctor and author of “Fine Boys”, is also expected. Farafina published Eghosa’s first novel “To Saint Patrick” in 2008.
The 10-day workshop comprising intensive classes where participants are assigned a wide range of daily reading and writing exercises is aimed at helping Nigerian writers improve their craft as well as encourage budding writers to embrace new and refreshing perspectives in the unique art of storytelling.
Binyavanga Wainana, who in 2007 declined the World Economic Forum “Young Global Leader” award given to people for “their potential to contribute to shaping the future of the world” has been part of the workshop since 2009. Other writers who have participated in the workshop and Literary Evening include Jeffery Renard Allen, Robert Spillman, Ama Ata Aidoo, and Chika Ike.
The workshop, which began in 2009, is in its 5th season and the organizers have promised guests an exciting time at the event.

Police Introduce Biometric Vehicle Registration

The Police said the introduction of a new Biometric Central Motor Registration (BCMR) is designed to fight terrorism, Kidnapping and car theft in the country. Police force spokesman CSP Frank Mba made this known at a press briefing in Abuja yesterday. He said the registration take effect from Monday next week and would involve the registration processes of vehicles, tricycles and auto-bikes from the analogue to the new system. He argued that the decision informing the introduction of the new process was against the backdrop of contemporary security challenges bordering on terrorism, high incidence of car theft, carjacking, kidnappings and other crimes. Mba said unlike the analogue procedure, the new method operate on smart-cards and portable hand-held receiver and is a specially developed technological means of attaching automobile owner's unique traits and personal data to their vehicles for proper identification and protection purposes.
