It has been dubbed the tussle of the century, the two electronics giant wage a war as to, who will dominate the wrist of the consumer?
Sony and Samsung have launched their version of the Smartwatch. Sony has unveiled its version, the SmartWatch 2. The SmartWatch 2 is attractive and tastefully designed, is water resistant and features a number of applications and watch faces. On the other hand the Samsung Galaxy Gear is no pushover and runs on a specially customized Android OS platform. The Galaxy Gear is powered by a 800MHz processor and also has a big color OLED. The device also features a speaker, mic as well as a miniature camera.
However the question which is being asked is- Are these devices of any use and how do they compare against one another.
The SmartWatch 2 has a flexible silicone wristband which fits snugly on the wrist. At present Sony has not unveiled any color options but can feature one in the future. The main body of the device is made of aluminum and this has ensured that the smartwatch remains light and svelte.
In comparison the Galaxy Gear looks more imposing with dimensions of 1.45 inches tall by 2.2 inches wide and 0.44 inch thick. It is bigger and heavier than the Sony Smartwatch. The device also features a camera and speaker on its strap. The Galaxy Gear is available in more than six colors. The colors include jet black, mocha gray, wild orange, oatmeal beige, rose gold, and lime green. The SmartWatch 2 screen fares poorly in comparison to the Galaxy Gear’s 1.63-inch viewer. The Sony device also has lesser pixels of 220×176 pixels as opposed to 320×320 pixels.
The SmartWatch 2 features a touchscreen UI, widgets which tell the conditions of weather, Facebook, Twitter, e-mail. The SmartWatch 2 is also compatible with other Android devices. The SW2 has a dialpad for initiating calls but does not feature speakers or microphone so the user will have to use a Bluetooth headset or a smartphone.
The Galaxy Gear also has all the features but the device is fully locked in the Samsung Ecosystem and hence the device is compatible only with Samsung Galaxy Note 3. This could be its biggest downside. The Galaxy Gear features a 1.9 megapixel camera and can take pictures as well as 720p HD video.
In a nutshell, the Galaxy Gear is a classic Samsung product. The device bears a price tag $299 which is a bit steep. Sony SmartWatch 2 on the other hand symbolizes a handsome fruition of an fascinating but underwhelming device.
