If he is not available again before the end of the year, Messi would sit out four Primera Division matches, the Champions League clashes against Ajax and Celtic, and both legs of the Copa del Rey last-32 tie against Cartagena.
The good news for Barca is that they boast a three-point lead at the top of La Liga and are already through to the knockout stages in Europe.
The world player of the year, 26, has suffered from hamstring issues in the past, including twice already this season having also damaged the left one in the first leg of the Spanish Super Copa and then the right one at the end of September.
He was out of action for a week the first time and for three weeks the second.
His team-mate Cesc Fabregas, who experienced similar problems while at Arsenal, on Sunday night urged Messi not to try to rush his recovery.
'He needs to take as much time as he needs, to recover and get back to his level. We need him at his best,' he said.
'I had something similar at Arsenal. You think you're okay, but you're not.
'I had this injury, I wasn't right for up to a year and half, it's a really frustrating injury. You need to take whatever time you need because if you don't it won't heal properly,' the Spain international told Canal Plus.

Mission: Messi has been chosen by Franz Beckenbauer to captain a Galaxy XI

Fabregas, who scored two second-half goals in the win over Betis, also picked up a knee injury in the victory and will be sidelined for seven days, Barca announced.
He will be replaced in the Spain squad for the friendlies against Equatorial Guinea and South Africa by his Barca team-mate Marc Bartra.
It is the first time the 22-year-old centre-back has been called up by the reigning world and European champions.
Messi, meanwhile, has been chosen by Franz Beckenbauer to captain a Galaxy XI against a team of aliens as part of an elaborate advertising campaign.
Over the past few weeks, Samsung have been whipping up publicity by sending mysterious men in black cloaks to Stamford Bridge, Juventus Stadium and the Allianz Arena as part of a Galaxy XI campaign.
As part of the advertisement, Beckenbauer claims that the Galaxy XI need to win a match against aliens that threaten to take over the planet.
Messi features in the new ad which sees him running through the streets of Barcelona with a football as a hoard of black cars begin to chase him.
Just as you think he’s going to get away, a car stops in front of him to reveal Beckenbauer holding his Galaxy XI captain’s armband.

13 Places You Should Visit In before the end of 2013

Wikimedia Commons It's more than halfway through 2013 and even though the summer is winding down, there's still plenty of time to book a trip to a great destination. We looked at major developments, cultural trends, and global festivals to find the hottest places to travel around the world in 2013. Samsung reportedly close to releasing Glass competitor — and Google’s involved

This one is definitely a rumor, but its source is reliable enough to warrant a little speculation. Analyst and blogger  Eldar Murtazin  tweeted a rather definite message this week that Samsung is “developing [its] own version of Google Glass. We will see it (probably) around April – May under Gear Glass brand.” Given that Google’s own version of Glass is not expected to hit the mass market until early 2014, Samsung’s Glass competitor could very well race Google’s to market. That might seem like a nightmare for Google, which has invested heavily in Glass and is no doubt planning for a strong event launch, but as was pointed out in a CNet article, the use of the word “Glass” implies an official partnership. Samsung is known for its aggressive branding and Google would likely raise legal concerns regardless, so it’s unlikely the brand Gear Glass would be used without a partnership. Does Google even want to sell Glass, or does it just want you wearing face-screens? ...
