Skype to be pre-installed in new version of Microsoft Windows

Skype will be pre-installed in Microsoft Windows 8.1, due to be released next month. Skype is owned by Microsoft. Bloatware is the term given to programs that come pre-installed on computers even though it's unlikely they will be used by every owner. Sometimes they are difficult to get rid of and can consume resources unnecessarily. Pre-installed anti- virus software has often fit that definition. Now, Skype looks to be joining that list. Microsoft owns the voice, audio and text messaging program and will be making it the default instant communications tool on the newest version of Windows. "This is fantastic news for both Skype and Windows users," Skype said in a blog post . "Now you don’t have to download your favorite app to stay in touch whenever you’re apart. With Windows 8.1, simply tap the Skype Live Tile, log in, and you’re ready to go." The new integration is similar to how Apple installs its FaceTime video chat service on the OSX operating

Solar-Powered Ubuntu Laptop Boasts 10h Battery Life

Solar-powered laptops are understandably more difficult to build in an efficient and cost-effective manner, but it seems a Canadian company called WeWi Telecommunications, Inc. has found a solution. WeWi has unveiled an  Ubuntu laptop  that can be powered solely by solar energy and boasts an impressive 10 hour battery life. And the whole package costs only $350. A $400 waterproof version is also available. Dubbed SOL, the Ubuntu powered laptop sports a rugged look that makes you think it would survive a 10-foot drop. It probably wouldn’t but its look matches its purpose: that of being used in developing nations with a lot of sun and limited access to electricity or by adventurers who are traveling around the globe. Available in different colors including black, red, gray, bright green, the  solar-powered laptop  is provided with a detachable solar panel that developers say can provide enough batter juice to keep the device running for 10 hours after being kept as little as 2

First Firefox OS smartphones to be sold on EBay

The ZTE Open, the first Firefox OS smartphone, will soon be available for purchase for U.S. customers on EBay. (ZTE) By Salvador Rodriguez August 12, 2013, 12:55 p.m. Smartphone maker ZTE said it will sell Mozilla's first Firefox OS smartphone on EBay to U.S. customers but did not say when it would be available for sale. The ZTE Open, which went on sale last month in Spain, Venezuela and Colombia, will be sold for $79.99. The device comes unlocked and will be able to work with all cellular networks, according to the Chinese phone maker. Firefox OS is a new operating system developed by Mozilla, the maker of the popular Firefox Web browser. Mozilla says it is releasing the new platform as a way to give consumers more choices besides Apple and Google, the two companies that currently dominate the smartphone market. Mozilla also says Firefox OS is aiming to make owning a smartphone affordable, especially for those in emerging markets. "The ZTE Open offers customers

AMD passing on phones, focusing on tablets and hybrids

Chip maker says at CES it will put its weight behind devices that can show off the 'beautiful graphics that we bring' Computerworld - The PC market may be taking a beating but chip maker Advanced Micro Devices is has no plans to move toward the hot new market: smartphones. Mark Papermaster, chief technology officer at AMD, made it clear in an interview with Computerworld on Tuesday that his company has no interest in the smartphone market. Instead, AMD, which has struggled in the past few years, is going to focus on tablets, lightweight laptops and hybrids of the two . "We're not going after the handheld space," said Papermaster, who is attending the annual International CES show in Las Vegas this week. "It's a crowded market right now. We're focusing on differentiating on the beautiful graphics that we bring. When you have a 3-in. screen, you don't have the screen density to realize that difference." What's large in AMD's vi

WD shrinks laptop drives to just 5mm thick

The new slim drives offer greater shock resistance for mobile applications Computerworld - Western Digital is now shipping what it calls the world's slimmest laptop drive series. The drives are just 5mm, or about one-fifth of an inch, thick -- 2mm slimmer than any other 2.5-in form factor drives to date. The WD Blue Ultra Slim notebook drive. Most 2.5-in laptop drives are are 9.5mm or 7mm high and have two platters. The new drive has a single, 500GB platter, WD said. The new drive series includes the WD Blue hard disk drive and WD Black SSHD (solid-state hybrid drive), which combines NAND flash with traditional spinning disk. Both offer 500GB of storage capacity. "Our engineering team took a clean-sheet approach with 5 mm to deliver an ultra-thin hard drive that enables a world of possibilities and applications for mobile computing and beyond," Matt Rutledge, vice president of WD's client computing business unit, said in a statement. Apple-Samsung rivalry intensifies with September device launches

iPhone 5S needs leading-edge innovation to stand out from cheaper, near-equal Androids, analysts said Computerworld - Apple's unveiling of its iPhone 5S is expected Sept. 10, just six days after Samsung's launch in Germany of its next Galaxy gadget, probably a Note III smartphone-tablet. While the two products aren't directly comparable, the timing of the two announcements is another reminder of the intense rivalry between Apple and Samsung. The South Korean device maker is clearly putting pressure on Apple to produce exciting new products at each launch and to differentiate iPhones from a wide range of Android phones made by Samsung and others, analysts said. "Even though the [new Samsung and Apple] phones aren't directly comparable, Samsung's launch timing was designed to steal attention away from Apple's new iPhones," said Patrick Moorhead, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy. "Samsung didn't want to give Apple an unencumbered

How To Install Windows 8 From a USB Device Instructions on Using a USB Flash Drive To Install Windows 8

The need to install Windows 8 from a USB device, like a flash drive, is a common one due to the fact that many computers, especially tablets and smaller laptops and desktops, no longer have optical drives. In other words, that Windows 8 install disc doesn't do you much good if you don't have anywhere to put the DVD! If you want to install Windows 8 from a USB device, you'll need to get those setup files onto a USB device. Unfortunately, simply copying them there won't do. Windows 8 is also sold as a downloadable ISO file which, if you choose to buy Windows 8 that way, requires some steps to get it properly copied to a flash drive as well. Regardless of whether you have a Windows 8 DVD you need to get on a flash drive, or a Windows 8 ISO file with the same goal, the following tutorial will help you get the Windows 8 installation files properly copied to a flash drive so you can get on with the installation process. Note: The following procedure applies equally t

Customize Your Windows 8 Installation Disc and Slipstream Updates With WinReducer

Windows installation disc-customizing tools are always useful. They allow you to add Windows updates to your installation media, streamline the installation process by filling in your product key and other information, and customize Windows’ default settings. We previously covered RT Se7en Lite for Windows 7 , and WinReducer works similarly for Windows 8. Both tools work similarly to the nLite tool for Windows XP — WinReducer is like an nLite for Windows 8. Setup First, download WinReducer 8 . This software is technically in beta at the moment because of how new Windows 8 is, but it worked fine for us. That said, WinReducer includes a warning that it shouldn’t yet be used for production purposes. It’s okay to experiment with it on your own, but don’t use it to customize an entire organization’s mission-critical Windows 8 installer discs just yet. Launch WinReducer after extracting it and you’ll immediately see an error message. The message tells you you’ll have to manuall

Samsung and BlackBerry team up over BBM, marketing in Africa

Smartphone manufacturers Samsung and BlackBerry have teamed up to announce a new marketing partnership across Africa. As part of the arrangement, Samsung has said that it will include the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) for Android app in its curated app store for Galaxy handsets, alongside its own ChatOn service. BBM will form part of the Samsung Messaging Hub that comes preinstalled on all of the South Korean firm's Android smartphones. The BBM for Android app is still in a closed beta testing stage, but BlackBerry says that it will be available in the Samsung Apps store on launch day. REVIEW: Google Made A Tablet That's Better Than The iPad Mini

It's still tough to think of Google as a hardware company. But in the last year and change, it's been surprising everyone with a string of great products. There's the Nexus 4 smartphone . The Chromebook Pixel laptop . The Chromecast video streaming dongle for your TV. And now there's an update to its well-reviewed 7-inch tablet, the Nexus 7. The new Nexus 7, which is built by Asus, improves on the original in every conceivable way while still keeping the price low at a very reasonable $229 . If you're looking for an affordable, smaller tablet, the Nexus 7 is the first device you should look at. The Best Tiny Tablet Simply put, the Nexus 7 is a better overall tablet than Apple's iPad Mini . It has a sharper screen, it plays full HD video, and it has better speakers that play in stereo. And you get all that for $100 less than the iPad Mini. Even if you want to double the  Nexus 7's storage to 32 GB, you only have to pay an extra $40, not t

How Microsoft blundered with the SkyDrive brand

Microsoft must rename its SkyDrive online storage service after losing a trademark infringement case in a U.K. court. Analysts and legal experts said that Microsoft’s blunder would cost it dearly, and wondered how the American technology giant could have made such a mistake. “It’s unbelievable to me that Microsoft did not see this coming,” said Peter LaMotte, an analyst with Levick, a Washington, D.C.-based strategic communications consultancy. “They should have seen it coming. And this is not the first time that this has happened to them.” LaMotte, who before he joined Levick had helped numerous startups with their branding efforts, was referring to last year, when Microsoft backed away from the “Metro” name to describe the new Windows 8 and Windows RT user interface and the apps that run on those platforms. "It's unbelievable to me that Microsoft did not see this coming. And this is not the first time that this has happened to them." Microsoft dropped

Moto X Release: Google Bets On Voice Control And Customization With New Phone

Moto X is finally here. Google on Thursday unveiled the Moto X, the first smartphone fully designed and built by Motorola since it was bought by Google last year. But thanks to recent leaks , the phone's biggest features didn't come as a surprise: The device can be customized with different colored rear casings and accents, it has a camera that is activated with a flick of the wrist, and like the new Droid lineup announced last week, many of the phone's functions -- including Google search -- can be controlled solely by your voice. At a press event on Thursday, Rick Osterloh, Motorola Mobility's senior vice president of product management, lamented that smartphones today aren't actually very smart. "Phones today require you to manually enter a pin and touch it," Osterloh said. "It should be able to respond to you." Motorola is touting Touchless Control as one of its best features. It allows Moto X owners to set alarms, get directions

New BlackBerry 7 device appears set to arrive as the BlackBerry 9720

During the BlackBerry Q1 2014 conference call , BlackBerry CEO, Thorsten Heins let it be known a new BlackBerry 7 device would be released soon. Before that, there was plenty of rumors one was coming but that sealed the deal for it. At this point, there's no official branding for the device that we're aware of but there is plenty of references in recent builds of BlackBerry Desktop Manager that suggest it will be a 'Curve' series device. But with that being said, we've seen stuff change before so alas, wait and see how it gets branded. Aside from that, the UAProf (viewable in Firefox) required for it has appeared on the BlackBerry website and confirms a few other details about the device. It's listed as the BlackBerry 9720. Full QWERTY keyboard. Display resolution is 480x360 Runs BlackBerry OS 7.1 Supports: 802.11b / 802.11g / 802.11n / 3G Overall, pretty obvious stuff and no surprises there but that was pretty much expected. Personall

A Homeless Man and His BlackBerry

You could tell he was different the moment he walked in the coffee shop. It wasn't his appearance. He looked presentable, if a little rough around the edges, clutching an old BlackBerry to his barrel chest. It was how he moved: warily, shoulders hunched over and eyes darting. The body language would read as suspicious, if not for the flicker of fear and apprehension in his eyes — as if he was scared of being noticed, vigilant to his surroundings and desperately trying to blend in at the same time. He ordered a coffee, carefully counting out coins on the counter. He sat down at the table near me and pulled out his phone, just like nearly everyone else at the shop. He punched in a few numbers and began talking in a low voice, discreet but urgent. I was only a few seats away, but I couldn't help but overhear his conversations. Did someone have some cash jobs for him? Could he crash at a friend of a friend's place? Could he get a ride out to the soup kitchen? After a few

7 Big Changes Coming in Internet Explorer 11

Microsoft thinks very highly of its homegrown web browser, Internet Explorer . IE has been intertwined with Windows itself for over a decade, and when Microsoft debuted Windows 8 last year, it also released a new version of the browser, Internet Explorer 10 , that was created specifically for the full-screen, touch-first experience that Windows 8 emphasizes. By its nature, IE10 was a big change, but it also had some strange limitations. Web content took up the whole screen unless you right-clicked — only then did you see your tabs or the URL bar. You couldn’t manage Favorites. You could only have 10 tabs open at once. To make the transition bearable, Microsoft kept a version of IE10 in the traditional desktop environment, although the same engine powers both. SEE ALSO: The Problem With Windows 8 When Windows 8.1 debuts this fall, it will bring with it an upgraded browser for the modern UI: Internet Explorer 11. Just as Windows 8.1 does with Windows 8, IE11 fixes, tweak

Apple 1 Up For Auction, First Apple Computer Could Fetch Over $500,000

It's the kind of electronic junk that piles up in basements and garages — an old computer motherboard with wires sticking out. But because it was designed by two college dropouts named Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, it could be worth more than half a million dollars (€375,000). An Apple 1 from 1976, one of the first Apple computers ever built and forerunner of today's MacBooks, IPads and IPhones, goes on the auction block at Christie's next week. The bidding starts at $300,000 (€227,000). "This is a piece of history that made a difference in the world; it's where the computer revolution started," said Ted Perry, a retired school psychologist who owns the old Apple and has kept it stashed away in a cardboard box at his home outside Sacramento, California. The green piece of plastic covered with a copper-colored labyrinth of memory chips was one of the first 25 such computer elements, and sold for $666.66. About 200 were made but most have disappeare

Celebrity Sex Advice: Quotes From Young Female Celebrities

This week, Nerve published a list of the best sex advice from celebrities over 40 . Though I’m not denying that these stars know what they're talking about -- i would literally take any advice Meryl Streep gave us -- i also don't want to discount the sexual wisdom of younger generations. Here are seven pieces of our favorite sex advice from famous women age 40 and under. 1. Don't be afraid of dirty talk. I know a lot of people have a hard time talking dirty -- they don't know what to say, how to start, or when to end it. Also, at first they will think they sound ridiculous. And they might. But let me just say that talking dirty is so important in sex. And it's pretty easy. To wit: Establish from the very beginning that you like this. And trust me, you want to do it early on. Because if you wait too long to introduce the concept, your Special Lady Friend will be a little thrown and might not take you seriously. -- Olivia Munn , 32
