WHY NIGERIAN KIDS STUDYING IN THE UK ARE KILLED

Mr Richard Taylor, father of 11 year old Damilola who was killed in Peckham, South London in 2000, has said that African children, mostly Nigerians, are continually being killed in London because they refuse to join gangs and deal in drugs. In an interview with the Daily Trust in London, Mr Taylor explained that the callous killings of black children are mostly carried out by teenage gangs who are into drugs and are jealous of the academic performance of Nigerian and other African children in the UK. He, however, lamented that the ugly situation may continue for some time because UK laws on capital crimes are seemingly “weak” as they tend to protect the accused rather than the victim. Mr Taylor opined that only when criminals are meted punishment commensurate with their crimes that the spate of teenage killings in London would abate, and advocated the reintroduction of capital punishment in the UK. “It is only when the right form of justice is meted out to perpetrators of crime –...

Man Forced To Sleep With His Dead Girlfriend In Akwa Ibom

Uyo — In Akwa Ibom State a man may have to marry the corpse of his girlfriend, if the culture demands this. After several fruitless efforts to see the Eberefiak Oku Uyo (Clan head of Uyo and custodian of Ibibio culture) in his palace for comments on the matter, one of the Uyo chiefs met at the palace, Chief Effiong Udoh Akpan told Daily Trust "Such marriages are conducted between a boy friend that sees a girl that he likes, invites the girl to his house and decides to live with her in the house without initiating the process of traditional marriage up to the time the girl died while living with him. After fulfilling all the traditional marriage rites, the boy friend is then given the permission by her parents to go ahead and bury her. That is entirely a different procedure. "The corpse of the lady will be laid in state and the boy friend will come and lie down beside the corpse. He must lie down beside the corpse for a whole night because she is his wife. The boy friend wi...

Google bets on Africa as the next Internet hotspot

To global search giant, Google, Africa is the next Internet hotspot. Globally, there are 94 domains registered per 10 000 users. However, in Africa, there is only one domain per 10 000 users. As such, there is tremendous potential for growth on the continent in the web space. Through its Africa programs focused on getting more Africans online, the company is betting that by developing an accessible, vibrant and self sufficient Internet ecosystem on the continent many more Africans would come online. Key among its strategies to develop the continent’s Internet ecosystem is to increase the amount of local African content online. “If you want to be successful you have to do a good job at localising content,” said Nelson Mattos, Google’s VP of Development for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) at a Google event in South Africa. To do this effectively, the company has launched initiatives such as the Get African Business Online (GABO) initiative last year as a pilot to a select number...

His mother, a trader, also confirmed that Kolawole at a time suffered insanity that was treated. She also said that she told Titilayo to stay in her father’s house when she realized they were incompatible, but denied that her son was a ritualist. She equally used the opportunity to beg for mercy from Oyakhire’s family. Excerpts from the interview; Mummy, do you think this can be a spiritual attack as claimed? Ki Olorun Ogbawa Lowo Ogun Aye (May God save us from spiritual attacks). Since they got married it was misunderstanding and fights everyday. There was no month that we didn’t settle a quarrel between them. I was fed up to the point that in January this year, I told Omo(Titilayo) to go to their house,...

AT least, 13 family homes and properties, worth millions of naira, have been swallowed up in a gorge measuring about three hundred metres deep and 300m wide, in Amachalla village, Awka, the Anambra State capital. The lawmaker representing Awka South 1 Constituency in the State Assembly, Engr Kenechukwu Chukwuemeka, who was invited to the location by residents, was short of words when he saw the extent of damage. Chukwuemeka, who fought back tears while consoling wailing mothers, toddlers and youth, whose homes and belongings were swept away by torrential rains, urged for calm, assuring them that “something urgent is going to be done by the state government.” Chukwuemeka urged Governor Peter Obi, the State’s Ministries of Environment, Special Duties, Senator Chris Ngige, the Federal Government and Representative Emeka Nwogbo to come to the aid of the residents. He urged them to pool efforts together through the instrumentality of their offices to resettle them and see how some of th...
