President Jonathan condemns terror attack in UK

British soldier, Drummer Lee Rigby President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed shock over the gruesome murder of a British soldier, Drummer Lee Rigby of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in the Woolwich area of London, United Kingdom. Federal Government declares May 29 public holiday

Wednesday, May 29, has been declared public holiday by the Federal Government of Nigeria to mark the 2013 Democracy Day. This was contained in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Annesthesia Nwaobia on Thursday in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. According to the statement, the Interior Minister, Comrade Abba Moro had declared the public holiday on behalf of the Federal Government. Moro urged Nigerians to deepen their participation in democratic governance to enable them pass on the baton of credible and good governance to upcoming generations. He congratulated Nigerians on the attainment of yet another successful year of the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan. Adoke drags Dino Melaye to court in N10billion libel suit

Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, has filed a N10 billion libel suit against the Executive Secretary of Anti-Corruption Network, Mr. Dino Melaye. Adoke is accusing the member of the House of Representatives and his group of discrediting him through publication of defamatory articles in both a Nigerian-based newspaper as well as an online news medium. The AGF said the publications quoted a letter sent by Anti-Corruption Network to President Goodluck Jonathan complaining of his (Adoke’s) alleged abuse of power, while asking the president to sack him. ACN alleged that Adoke had on December 2012, disclosed that the police killed 7,106 persons extra-judicially in four years, out of which 2,000 were detainees and suspects.   A house has been raided in connection with the murder of a soldier in Woolwich yesterday afternoon. The police swooped on the house as the name of one of the suspects was revealed on internet forums and Twitter as Michael Adebolajo. He was the alleged killer seen ranting on video shortly after the murder of a soldier is believed to be Michael Adebolajo.

Man, 26, charged for adultery, impregnating 14-year-old

A 26-year-old civil servant, Mr. Abubakar Dauda, has been arraigned before a Kuje Area Court for alleged adultery and child abuse. The police prosecutor, Ocheche Samuel, told the court presided over by Justice Nuhu Ibrahim that the matter was reported to the Kuje Police Station by one Hamza Shaibu of Lanto Road, Passali, Kuje on April 30. He informed the court that the accused who resides opposite the Central Mosque at Passali, impregnated the complainant’s 14-year-old daughter, Fatima Hamza. According to the prosecutor, the accused allegedly invites Fatima to his bedroom through the help of his sister whenever he wants to have sex with her. He added that investigation proved that the accused had been having carnal knowledge of the girl since 2012 and she was now five months pregnant. Ocheche said the offense contravened the provisions of Section 387 of the Penal Code. Man jailed for selling pirated copies of El-Rufai’s book

A book seller, Chibueze Akamu, on Wednesday was sentenced to three months imprisonment by a Federal High Court, sitting in Lagos, for having being found guilty of selling pirated books. The convict, a resident of No. 69, Owodunni Street, Iwaya, Yaba, Lagos was charged by the Nigerian Copyright Commission,NCC,. He had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of piracy and sale of pirated books. Delivering the judgment, Justice Saliu Saidu said: “Having pleaded guilty to the charge before this honourable court, the accused is hereby convicted as charged. “The accused is sentenced to three months imprisonment on each count’’ The judge said, noting that the terms would run concurrently. The prosecutor, Mrs Lynda Alphaeus, had told the court that the accused was apprehended on April 25, at Oyingbo, Lagos. Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika, has accused his men of collaborating with members of the Boko Haram sects by exposing top secrets of their operations to the insurgents. The army boss said this in Abuja at a seminar on personnel management and development organized by the Army Transformation and Innovation Center. Ihejirika said that soldiers who have been collaborating with Boko Haram insurgents had hindered military operations, even causing the death of his men. The COAS boss warned soldiers to stop such acts, and vowed to deal with those found guilty of the offence decisively. Police arrests killer of Kwara commissioner of police

The Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Abubakar says the suspected killers of Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chinwike Asadu, have been arrested. Asadu was murdered about three months ago at his Amorji Nike residence in Enugu State. Briefing  journalists, Wednesday, in Enugu during his official working visit to the state, the IGP said the arms used by the killers during the operation were also recovered by the police. He said following the confessional statements by the seven persons arrested, the police were on the trail of other collaborators in the murder.

Some artistes in the Nigerian music industry on Tuesday turned out en masse to clean up the streets of Lagos, feed the hungry and visit the homeless. The musicians who participated in the exercise included TuFace Idibia, who was accompanied by his manager, Mr Efe Omorogbe.
