Dolce And Gabbana Guilty: Designers Convicted Of Evading Taxes On $1.3 Billion In Income

A Milan court on Wednesday convicted the designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana of tax evasion. They were found guilty of failing to declare 200 million euros ($268 million) through a Luxembourg company to authorities and given a one year and eight months suspended jail sentence. They were ordered to pay a penalty of 500,000 euros (about $670,000) to tax authorities. The court, however, acquitted them of misrepresenting income of 416 million euros (around $560 million) each, even though the statute of limitations had expired on the charge. The designers have denied the charges. Defense lawyer Massimo Dinoia pledged to appeal the ruling, saying the fact the court issued an acquittal on a charge that had expired, instead of just letting it fall to the statute of limitations, "means the proof of their innocence is evident." Two years ago, a judge threw out a tax evasion and fraud case against the pair, whose label Dolce&Gabbana is a Milan fashion mainstay. Italy

Katy Perry's Vogue Cover Is Here: See The Singer's High-Fashion Break! (PHOTO)

American Vogue , you tease. When we learned back in April that the fashion magazine to end all fashion magazines might feature Katy Perry on its hallowed cover, we practically lit fireworks in her honor. Vogue debuted Katy's July cover on their website today... and little else. The mag writes that the photo was shot by none other than Vogue fave Annie Leibovitz , and provided a teeny tease on the accompanying article, which we can't read until next Tuesday: Leaving pop novelty and broken hearts behind her, Katy Perry has grown into her formidable talent. Sounds juicy. Katy's Rodarte-outfitted cover certainly shows a leap in maturity of sorts, as she's previously been featured on the brand's more junior Teen Vogue . Showcasing a performer follows magazines' recent trend of featuring non-models on their glossiest page. Though the question remains: Do singers sell well on newsstands? Congratulations, Katy! Better whip out that Dolce & Gabbana crown

Men Cause Menopause? Sexual Preference For Younger Women May Be Behind 'The Change'

By: Tia Ghose, LiveScience Staff Writer Published: 06/13/2013 05:04 PM EDT on LiveScience Ladies, here's one more thing you can blame on men: menopause. At least, that's according to a new theory. Women go through menopause because men have consistently preferred younger women in recent evolutionary history, according to a study published today (June 13) in the journal PLOS Computational Biology. Thus, menopause is not evolutionarily advantageous and may be the result of a series of random, harmful mutations that accumulated in women but weren't acted on by evolution because the women had already reproduced by the time the mutations affected them. "Our first assumption is that mating in humans is not random with respect to age, which means men of all ages prefer to mate with younger women," said study co-author Rama Singh, an evolutionary biologist at McMaster University in Canada. "If mating is with younger women, any deleterious mutations which affe

Of Saka, porting and logic of history

Hafiz Oyetoro An interesting debate has been raging on in the communication and advertising sub-sectors in the last couple of weeks. It was stirred by the sudden and dramatic switch of camps by artiste Hafeez Oyetoro, alias Saka, from Etisalat to MTN .  This   controversy is similar to the occasional hullabaloo that always accompanied  the defecting of a notable Nigerian  political figure from one   political party to another.  ‘Saka’ is a popular character that was specially created to market Etisalat by its ad agency, and was highly successful in that regard. But quite suddenly, on the heels of the Nigerian Communications Commission’s   Mobile Number Portability campaign recently, MTN cleverly got  him to “port go” and thus he  deserted  Etisalat in a manner that seems to have left a sour taste in the mouths of not just some people in the advertising world but also many observers.
