Eagles are improving with every game – Omokaro

Former Super Eagles defender, Bright Omokaro has said that the Eagles made appreciable improve-ment in their match against Uruguay on Thursday in the on-going Confederations Cup compared to their first outing against Oceanian champions, Tahiti. “There was a commendable approach, which the boys took this time around; they improved a lot upon the previous game against Tahiti. “Football is a game of luck, and it dangles. It can swing in your favour and at other times, can favour the other side. I’m happy they are showing improvement,” Omokaro, nicknamed 10-10 during the 1990 Africa Nations Cup in Algeria, said Also contributing, Harrison Okagbue, a former coach of Uganda, said the Eagles were not left a slim chance to qualify and that Keshi should work on their mind set. “Right now, we are in a tight corner. For us to prevail, we have to defeat Spain. “It will sound strange though, but we can still come out victorious if only the boys can play their best and learn how to pass ba

Obi presents N100m to the army

Satisfied with the level of work carried out by army engineers in the reconstruction of internal roads within the Barracks at Onitsha, Governor Peter Obi Friday presented another cheque of N100 Million Naira to the Army, bringing it to N200 million given to them so far for the project. Presenting the cheque, the Governor said that it was in line with the policy of his Government to work with all the Federal agencies in the State on the reason that all of them ultimately serve the good of the State and her people. He regretted that before he became Governor, it was  a cat and mouse relationship between Anambra Government and Security agencies in the State and that the State suffered because of that. “If you remember, in that reckless era, the State was burnt down. But I can assure you that with the level of civility we have restored, such a thing would not happen again, the Governor said. He also urged the army to continue to utilize the funds properly. He said that Government was

Video On Instagram: Facebook Adds 15-Second Videos To Photo-Sharing App

Video, meet Instagram. Facebook on Thursday announced that it had added video recording, editing, filtering and sharing capabilities to Instagram, the immensely popular photo sharing service Facebook bought last year for $1 billion. "We need to do to video what we did to photos," said Kevin Systrom, the co-founder and CEO of Instagram. "What we've done is made Instagram better." The app allows Instagram's 130 million monthly active users to record 15-second collages of video clips. Users can delete and re-record clips, and the app features Cinema, a video stabilization tool. Like photos that are shared on the app, videos on Instagram will have 13 custom filters. If any of this sounds familiar, it's because Facebook is taking a page right from Twitter's book. In January, Twitter released Vine , an app that records (and then plays on a loop) 6-second video clips. For Twitter, Vine has been nothing short of a huge succe

Trigger-happy Police man escapes mob-attack from UI students

A police corporal, Ajisafe Amos, escaped being lynched yesterday by angry students of the University of Ibadan when he gave a 400-level student of the institution, Adewale Adegboyega, a hot chase and allegedly shot his car at the main entrance of the university. Adegboyega, who is a student in the Department of Guidance and Counselling of the institution said he ran into the campus because he was not sure of his safety in the hands of the policemen he encountered. The police corporal reportedly shot twice with one bullet hitting the rear tyre of the student’s car. As the students heard the gunshots, they reportedly scampered for safety for fear of stray bullets. In protest of the action of the police team, the students led by the Student Union Government President, Babatunde Badmus, demanded the dismissal of the trigger-happy policeman. He added that it was dangerous for a policeman to shoot in  densely-populated institutions like the University of Ibadan. They seized the i

Nigerian hospital blazes trail in arm replacement surgery

For the first time, a Nigerian hospital has blazed the trail in metallic replacement of the whole arm bone, shoulder and elbow joints. The life-saving medical procedure which is the first in Nigeria and West Africa was performed by a team of surgeons at Lagoon Hospitals, Lagos. The team was led by Dr. Segun Abudu, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal Orthopedic Hospital, Birmingham UK, seconded to the hospital. Commenting on the ground breaking surgery, the Hygeia Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Lars Stork noted that a significant number of Nigerians who go abroad for similar treatment will now have it done in the country. Stork added that the outstanding achievement demonstrated the commitment of the hospital to operating at global standards. Research shows that there are only approximately 50 – 60 cases of this type of surgery performed even in the UK to date, therefore making this surgery historical. This operation adds to the number of high-end surgeries we ha

Mandela’s 95th birthday plans go ahead despite illness

Nelson Mandela’s foundation has vowed to press ahead with upcoming 95th birthday celebrations, as the global peace icon underwent a twelfth day in hospital Wednesday for a recurring lung infection. On the frail icon’s July 18 birthday, various charity organisations and businesses will paint schools, hand out food parcels and books, and run a 67 kilometre (41 miles) relay marathon in the spirit of Mandela’s 67 years of activism and public work. Mandela spent 27 years in jail for his opposition to white minority rule, and walked free to become the country’s first black president after all-race elections in 1994. “We see this as an opportunity for people to rise above Madiba’s hospitalisation,” said Sello Hatang, the foundation’s CEO, referring to Mandela by his clan name. The Nobel peace laureate, who devoted his life to promote education and AIDS activism, wanted people to carry on his good work, his great-grandson Mbuso Mandela told AFP. “His idea for me was just to continue the

Death penalty won’t stop kidnapping – Ajuyah,Delta Attorney-General

Wednesday April 17, 2013, has gone down as the day members of the 29-member Delta State House of Assembly took the bull by the horns to override the veto of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan on the bill stipulating death penalty for kidnappers. The governor had since November 2012 when the bill was passed and sent to him refused to assent to the bill. The State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Charles Ajuyah (SAN), in this interview shed more light on the issue especially from the executive’s perspective. The governor during his midterm report on Democracy Day mentioned that Delta State has the highest number of kidnappers prosecuted, could you throw more light on this? Yes, I have the statistics. It is true that so far with my interaction with other Attorneys General, I think Delta State is up to the task. We are not sparing any effort at all in ensuring that suspects arrested are prosecuted. And because of the nature of kidnapping, what it takes and the elements of the

Subsidy Bribe Scam: Farouk, Emenalo ask judge to hands-off trial

Justice Mudashiru Oniyangi of an Abuja High Court, Wednesday, fixed July 10 to rule on an application that was filed before him by the former Chairman and Secretary of the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on fuel subsidy probe, Farouk Lawal and Mr Boniface Emenalo, asking him to hands-off their trial. The embattled lawmakers who are facing corruption charge  entered against them by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, accused the judge of misappropriating the law when he held that the anti-graft agency successfully established a prima-facie criminal case to warrant their prosecution. Emenalo and Farouk Arguing through their lawyer, Mr Ricky Tarfa, SAN, the duo, insisted that the judge occasioned great injustice against them when he declined to quash the 7-count charge before the court for want of incriminating evidence, even as they maintained that the judge, on January 31, erroneously granted leave to the ICPC to file an “inco

Dolce And Gabbana Guilty: Designers Convicted Of Evading Taxes On $1.3 Billion In Income

A Milan court on Wednesday convicted the designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana of tax evasion. They were found guilty of failing to declare 200 million euros ($268 million) through a Luxembourg company to authorities and given a one year and eight months suspended jail sentence. They were ordered to pay a penalty of 500,000 euros (about $670,000) to tax authorities. The court, however, acquitted them of misrepresenting income of 416 million euros (around $560 million) each, even though the statute of limitations had expired on the charge. The designers have denied the charges. Defense lawyer Massimo Dinoia pledged to appeal the ruling, saying the fact the court issued an acquittal on a charge that had expired, instead of just letting it fall to the statute of limitations, "means the proof of their innocence is evident." Two years ago, a judge threw out a tax evasion and fraud case against the pair, whose label Dolce&Gabbana is a Milan fashion mainstay. Italy
