The ZTE Open, the first Firefox OS smartphone, will soon be available for purchase for U.S. customers on EBay. (ZTE) By Salvador Rodriguez August 12, 2013, 12:55 p.m. Smartphone maker ZTE said it will sell Mozilla's first Firefox OS smartphone on EBay to U.S. customers but did not say when it would be available for sale. The ZTE Open, which went on sale last month in Spain, Venezuela and Colombia, will be sold for $79.99. The device comes unlocked and will be able to work with all cellular networks, according to the Chinese phone maker. Firefox OS is a new operating system developed by Mozilla, the maker of the popular Firefox Web browser. Mozilla says it is releasing the new platform as a way to give consumers more choices besides Apple and Google, the two companies that currently dominate the smartphone market. Mozilla also says Firefox OS is aiming to make owning a smartphone affordable, especially for those in emerging markets. "The ZTE Open offers customers ...

AMD passing on phones, focusing on tablets and hybrids

Chip maker says at CES it will put its weight behind devices that can show off the 'beautiful graphics that we bring' Computerworld - The PC market may be taking a beating but chip maker Advanced Micro Devices is has no plans to move toward the hot new market: smartphones. Mark Papermaster, chief technology officer at AMD, made it clear in an interview with Computerworld on Tuesday that his company has no interest in the smartphone market. Instead, AMD, which has struggled in the past few years, is going to focus on tablets, lightweight laptops and hybrids of the two . "We're not going after the handheld space," said Papermaster, who is attending the annual International CES show in Las Vegas this week. "It's a crowded market right now. We're focusing on differentiating on the beautiful graphics that we bring. When you have a 3-in. screen, you don't have the screen density to realize that difference." What's large in AMD's vi...

Apple-Samsung rivalry intensifies with September device launches

iPhone 5S needs leading-edge innovation to stand out from cheaper, near-equal Androids, analysts said Computerworld - Apple's unveiling of its iPhone 5S is expected Sept. 10, just six days after Samsung's launch in Germany of its next Galaxy gadget, probably a Note III smartphone-tablet. While the two products aren't directly comparable, the timing of the two announcements is another reminder of the intense rivalry between Apple and Samsung. The South Korean device maker is clearly putting pressure on Apple to produce exciting new products at each launch and to differentiate iPhones from a wide range of Android phones made by Samsung and others, analysts said. "Even though the [new Samsung and Apple] phones aren't directly comparable, Samsung's launch timing was designed to steal attention away from Apple's new iPhones," said Patrick Moorhead, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy. "Samsung didn't want to give Apple an unencumbered ...

Is this it? Photo purportedly shows Apple 'iPhone 5C'

Apple is reportedly straying from its standard strategy this fall and launching not one, but two new iPhone handsets. The flagship model will be the iPhone 5S, which is said to feature a design similar to the iPhone 5 with the addition of a faster processor, a better camera, a fingerprint scanner and possibly a new champagne color option. The second is the more affordable “iPhone 5C,” high-quality photos of which were recently published by insider Sonny Dickson. Now Dickson is back with a new photo gallery -- this time showing the iPhone 5C shell in green. No new details are revealed by the images, though they once again support earlier rumors that the new entry-level iPhone will be made available in a variety of colors. Apple’s next-generation iPhone 5S will be unveiled during a press conference on September 10 and the new iPhone 5C will likely debut at the same event. Additional photos of the iPhone 5C shell follow below and the rest can be found on Dickson’s website...

Amnesty Int’l Says Lagos Govt. Must Stop Forceful Eviction Of Residents

Amnesty International has insisted that the Lagos state government must stop its forceful eviction of some selected residents of Lagos by demolishing their buildings. It is estimated that close to 9,000 residents of Badia East lost their homes or livelihoods. However senior officials in the Lagos state government had claimed that the area was a rubbish dump. New evidence from satellite images reveals the true extent of a forced eviction in Badia East, Lagos – one of Africa’s two megacities. The pictures, taken before and after demolitions carried out by the Lagos state government on 23 February 2013, clearly show that a densely populated area containing concrete houses and other structures was razed to the ground. A new report by Amnesty International and the Social and Economic Rights Action Centre (SERAC) looks at the impact of the demolitions and documents the failings of the Lagos state government. According to Oluwatosin Popoola who is Amnesty International’s Nigeria resea...

The Dangers Of Over-Exercising

#15 Too Much Of A Good Thing? Exercise can be compared to a remedy. The remedy is very effective for weight management and overall health, and it also keeps the body from injuring itself during everyday, light activities. However too much of any remedy can turn into a bad thing. Trainers only recommend intense exercise sessions in small doses because over-exercising can damage our bodies both chemically and physically. Remember, exercise is a reward! It shouldn’t be a compensation for poor eating habits.
