Enyeama keeps 11th consecutive clean-sheet!

Nigeria goalkeeper  Vincent Enyeama  claimed his 11th consecutive shut-out and 14th overall to displace Salvatore Sirigu as a late Nolan Roux goal gave Lille 1-0 win over Marseille. The result means the Super Eagles number one is now just 140 minutes shy of the French League record of consecutive clean-sheets held by Bordeaux goalkeeper Gaëtan Huard. To do so Enyeama only needs to keep Bastia out, and deny PSG for 52 minutes. The former Enyimba man only needed to protect his net for four minutes against Marseille to slip ahead of Sirigu. And despite the frenzy of those opening five minutes, the Nigerian barely had to do much. But then Marseille upped the ante, and it took brave, if sometimes insane, goalkeeping from the Super Eagles number one man to hold on to his record. First he pushed out Pierre Gignac's crossed curler away after 17 minutes, then made a monster save on 24 minutes from the same man as Marseille came dangerously close to ending his run. An initial...

Video shows rescue of ship's cook after three days under water

Newly released footage reveals moment Nigerian crew member is rescued after surviving in air pocket of sunken tugboat Ship's cook Harrison Okene spent three days under water after his tugboat sank off the coast of Nigeria. Photograph: DCN Diving Group / Barcroft USA Footage has emerged of the moment a ship's cook was rescued by divers after surviving for three days at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean in an air pocket on a sunken tugboat. Harrison Odjegba Okene, a Nigerian cook, survived by breathing an ever-dwindling supply of oxygen in an air pocket. As the temperature dropped to freezing, Okene, dressed only in boxer shorts, recited the last psalm his wife had sent by text message, sometimes called the Prayer for Deliverance: "Oh God, by your name, save me … The Lord sustains my life." Okene believes his rescue in May after 72 hours under water at a depth of 30 metres (about 100ft) is a sign of divine deliverance. The other 11 crew on board the Jasco...

Paul Walker Crash Story: Actor Was With Friend Roger Rodas

Investigators sought to determine the cause of a fiery crash that killed "Fast & Furious" star Paul Walker while the actor's fans erected a makeshift memorial Sunday near where the Porsche he was riding in smashed into a light pole and tree. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said speed was a factor in Saturday's one-car crash, though it will take time to determine how fast the car was going. Because Walker is so closely associated with the underground culture of street racing portrayed in the popular "Fast & Furious" film franchise, the fatal accident had an eerie quality — a tragic end for a Hollywood hero of speed. The crash also killed Walker's friend and financial adviser Roger Rodas, according to Walker's publicist, Ame Van Iden. She said Walker was a passenger in the 2005 red Porsche Carrera GT when they drove away from a fundraiser in the community of Valencia, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles...

ASUU Rejects Government’s Order To Resume

The striking Academic Staff Union of the Universities (ASUU) has rejected the Nigerian government’s ‘Back to Class’ order, describing it as a political blackmail. The government had on November 28 threatened to sack lecturers that failed to resume duties by December 4. Responding to the seven day ultimatum issued by the Supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, the union maintained that it would not be cowed by the threat. “We shall never succumb to this. Our country is our union’s constituency. We shall bow only to what we, as academics, are convinced will serve the interest of Nigeria and its people,” the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Mr. Nasir Faggae, told reporters on Monday in Abuja. The Federal Government, in a meeting with the uinon, agreed to deposit part of the funds that the union had requested for the revitalisation of public universities in Nigeria to meet international standard. President Goodluck Jonathan and the ...

US-based Nigerian Rapper, Wale, Prepares for 'War' as he Arrives Nigeria

To say rapper Wale is in for it as he arrives Nigeria isn't far from the truth. Wale will arrive the country today, (Tuesday) for his appearance at the ‘Step Up to VIP‘ event by Johnnie Walker holding on November 30, 2013. But speculation is arising that he may likely be shunned by Nigerian artistes just like Wale in the past also shunned Nigerian artistes and DJs back in the US. Wale was supposed to arrive the country last week for Ice Prince's FOZ concert, but he was dropped at the last minute, and he blamed it on the promoters, Kilimanjaro Entertainment, for abandoning him at the NYC airport, New York. Then DJ Humility took to Twitter and blasted Wale, calling him all manner of names, and accusing him of shunning him back in the US. M.I and Chiddy Bang also complained same. Source

Nigeria to return to paper banknotes

Nigeria will revert to paper banknotes in a policy switch that bucks a trend around the world for tougher polymer-based currency. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) signed a deal in 2006 with Australia's Securency International to print more-circulated lower units of the naira in polymer, while higher denominations were kept in paper form. But six years later - and after allegations the manufacturer bribed foreign officials to secure contracts, including in Nigeria - the CBN said it was being forced to reverse the policy. "Polymer has been on a test run since 2007. This explains why we did not go the whole hog by printing all the notes in polymer," CBN spokesman Ugochukwu Okoroafor told AFP. "We only used polymer for N5, N10, N20 and N50, while N100, N200, N500 and N1000 are in paper form. "We soon discovered that the (polymer) notes easily fade out because of our peculiar hot climate in Nigeria ... making them look tattered when ...

Amaechi, Four Other PDP Govs, nPDP Join APC

Photo: Vanguard PDP governors Abuja — The lingering crisis of confidence between the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, leadership and seven of its estranged governors reached a climax, yesterday, with the aggrieved governors formally defecting to the All Progressives Congress, APC. But it was not all rosy for the G-7 governors as two of the governors -- Babangida Aliyu of NigerState and his Jigawa counterpart, Sule Lamido-- disagreed with the other five on timing of the defection. While Lamido stayed away from the meeting, Aliyu only showed up at the venue, met briefly with his counterparts and hurried out of the Kano Governor's Lodge, the venue of the meeting, before the communiqué announcing the merger of nPDP with APC, was read to the media. In attendance at the meeting with the APC leaders, were the governors of Niger, Rivers, Kwara, Adamawa and a representative of the Jigawa ...

Happy 21st Birthday, Miley Cyrus! Have A Shot Of Malibu On me

Miley Cyrus has accomplished more in her first 21 years than most people will in a lifetime. As the music industry's wild child du jour can now legally down  glasses of Gatorade and Malibu , we'd like to take a moment to look back on how a little girl with a twang became a chart topping, tongue-wagging twerker in just over two decades: She started out with the best of both worlds.   Though there were controversies along the way ... She always knew how to "Party In The U.S.A."  Then Miley let everyone know she "CAN'T BE TAMED." And she started dating Liam Hemsworth.  After "Hannah Montana" ended, Miley chopped off her hair. Then came the twerk and the tongue. Followed by the end of her romance with Liam.  Of course, she recovered, and celebrated her latest achievement by sparking up a joint on stage at the MTV Europe Music Awards.  Exhausted? Well brace yourself for more, as we're sure whatever Cyrus has...

How Xbox One and PS4 have finally come of age

FOR years, games consoles were confined to bedrooms, where fans could blast away at characters on screen with outsize weaponry or play football games that made you feel you were really there in the stadium. It's all down to their evolution from a games centre for teenagers and guys who never grew up to an entertainment hub - streaming films, running the net, playing music - for the entire family. Microsoft's Xbox One, launched at midnight on Thursday, and Sony's new PlayStation 4, on sale this coming Friday, are now marketed as an entertainment centre for the entire household . "This is a savvy bit of marketing by both companies," Scots gaming expert Scott Munro said yesterday. "Microsoft and Sony realised that by restricting their consoles to games they were limiting their market. If they advertise them as all-singing, all-dancing media systems for the family, they open the consoles up to a much wider market. "Their idea is to market the...

BlackBerry updates BBM on Android and iPhone

BlackBerry has updated the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) application for Android devices and iPhones with additional support. Shortly after the troubled rollout of the BBM platform for non-BlackBerry devices, the company is moving to build users engagement to the platform in a competitive market. The Canadian-based company announced support for the iPod and iPad. The update also allows for Android users to improve filtering of contacts and addresses high battery consumption for some users. BlackBerry said that it fixed an issue where iPhone users reported that some contacts disappeared from the chat application. BBM users on non-BlackBerry platforms can also share their PIN with an improved Share PIN option. The company is determined to reclaim a larger share of the smartphone market it once dominated and on Wednesday, CEO John S Chen explained the strategy. "We have begun moving the company to embrace a multi-platform, BYOD world by adopting a new mobility management platform and ...

FATHER U-TURN DIES of KIDNEY DISEASE @ 36

One of Nigeria's most popular 90s musicians Olufemi Mayomi, aka Father U Turn, is dead. The dancehall artiste who rose from poverty as an orphan, to build a successful and inspiring career as a songwriter, recording artiste, TV presenter and performer, passed on in Lagos today, following a brief illness. He was 36 years old. The late U Turn was from Kabba-Bunu in Kogi State where he first tried his hands on entertainment, working as a radio and TV presenter. He had a brief stint at NTA in Lagos, after relocating here, before signing a deal with Ultima Records which released his early albums. He was a little boy, with braids and a charming personality. And his signature intro 'Apoola Berekete' was far beyond his stature. But he got the industry's attention and got a leg in the door before long. After years of club tours and free gigs, he got his first break when he was signed to one of the biggest record labels of the time, Ultima Records. Ultima engaged Nelson Brown ...
